I Borrowed thought form Beej IF THE TEMPTATIONS WERE IN COMPETITION WITH EACH OTHER ON AMERICAN IDOL, WHO DO YOU THINK WOULD'VE WON? Me personally would have picked Paul, because he had the stage presence and Charisma to charm the fans!

A provocative question: but first we must know the ground rules.
At what time in their careers does this competition take place. Does it take place when they are beginning and haven't yet learned the techniques of dance, stage presence, etc. and are still a bit awkward? Although all had sung in church, none had been in the big time. Or is it later in the '60's when they had acquired social graces.
And while we are deciding that, exactly what lineups are we talking about? Perhaps each person who decides to answer this question should state the lineup he is entering, or do we have all 21 Tempts competing?
Are they the only contestants and so are competing with each other?
And the REALLY BIG question, exactly what audience is doing the judging?
Lightdion, you choose Paul, but isn't the question really which Tempt would win as decided by a national audience? And that's a whole different ball game.
Now, for a few other decisions. It's been obvious on American Idol that the contestants have no clue as to which songs work best for them.
I suggest that we give each Tempt four different kinds of songs to sing, and, to be fair, the categories ought to be decided ahead of time. And by different, I mean different genres. None of this any Motown song bit. Let's hear how good they really are. Make the genres really different: country/western music, rock-and-roll, R & B, ballads, a standard from a musical. Make this a real test. Can anyone of them equal Nat King Cole at singing a ballad? If they are as good as I think they are, they should be able to handle almost anything. And to make it interesting, the song cannot be one they have recorded. I think that within any genre there is a wide variety of songs to choose from.
They do not sing the same song. The contestants only have a genre; their songs are different.
I realize that singers rarely are able to do all kinds of songs equally well, but that's where a bit of intelligence comes in. Surely one could find in each genre a song suited to his skills?
And everyone must realize the wide span of interests of the national audience. Is anyone who is knowledgeable about music likely to be voting in the American Idol call-in period? So maybe which one is likely to be regarded as the "cutest" by a national audience should be a thought in a final decision.

Paul would rip it, with the copa-style songs or whatever the genre is. I know if I could sing I'd do For Once in my Life since folks rarely hear or sing the slow version. I didn't even know it was slow til the movie.

If Paul were singing "For Once In My Life," I am sure Simon would vote thumbs up. I am not sure which song I'd have Eddie do because there are so many I like, but thinking of a general audience I'd say, "With These Hands."

MELVIN'S PERFORMANCE OF OL' MAN RIVER WOULD BLOW THE TOP OFF OF THE JUDGES. RANDY WOULD BE LIKE "DUDE, THAT WAS INVIGORATING...WE HAVE A HOT ONE IN THE HOUSE TONITE",PAULA WOULD HAVE TEARS IN HER EYES, AND SIMON WOULD DISH OUT A PRETTY DECENT REVIEW-LOL!

I would also have to pick Paul because he would just make me come alive and capture me into his world. It would be safe to say in this day and age, if there was a modern day Paul or a Paul incarnated he would be so electrifying it would literally take your breath away. RIP Paul we love you.

I would also pick Paul no words can fully describe his talent.
The finale show would be the most exciting thing ever: He and David going head to head as the final two.
