Still high off my Tempts concert from February, I was ready for this show like never before. I was so happy to be going with some friends from the Concert Review board, my Uncle George AND my cousin Briana. The Marvelettes were on first. Umm...how can I say this? They were'nt BAD. But I couldn't help thinking, "Will they hurry off the stage, so the Tempts can come on already?" LOL! I couldn't really get into them, but the few times, I actually paid attention, I realized, they didn't have much stage presence at all. Even the lead singer seemed to be going through the motions. The audience wasn't very receptive of them either, but were very generous in their applause when the Marvs left the stage. Of course, they could have been like me and were only clapping because they were glad it was over. >>>don't shoot me<<<
After a short intermission the show began. The band came out. We sat on the edge of our seats waiting to see what was about to happen!! The lights were spectacular, they played the Space Odyssey theme music, and the lights went completely black, the guys came out in the dark and then the music started, BUM BUM BUM BUM BUM! All five turned perfectly executed turns as the lights flashed with them. It was a wayyy cool entrance. They looked so handsome and very sharp in their blue suits with white shirts and white shoes.
They started the show with How Sweet It Is, from Reflections, and the audience ate it up!!! They screamed and shouted their approval through the entire song. Those new moves looked very precise and intricate. I was VERY impressed. After "How Sweet" the guys went into TWYDTTYD, and ATP. During Aint To Proud, GC hit a really high note, and we heard loud loud LOUD screams behind us. During Just My Imagination, Ron started singing and the audience joined in. Now this was funny because you know how Ron does the "That's my part" thing? HA- He said it on Friday, and NOBODY heard him they were singing so loudly. And kept right on singing until that part where nobody knows the words...LOL!
They went on to do the old favorites, and then started talking about how they were gonna slow things down. Ron said "we just started" Otis said, no, we started 45 years ago in Detroit, Michigan. The place went wild. It was a hometown crowd, because a lot of people came down from Detroit. Then they went into (something Slow, Soft, and Sexy) You Are So Neccessary. Let Me tell you this, when I got Legacy this was NOT one of my favorite tracks, but hearing it twice in concert I am so impressed with it, that I am finding myself playing it more and more.
They did the half circle in front of the stage and Otis conducted them. Well during the SSS, triple S song, folks were going wild. You could hear shouts of "I Love You Otis" through the first verse. Then when it got REALLY quiet, some female found it the best time to yell "COME AND GET ME OTIS!!!!" He had to calm himself from busting out laughing, and poor Terry couldn't take it. He cracked up and they never missed a note. When they finished the intro they went back behind their mikes, and did a little more of the song, swaying from side to side. O did his rapping bit, and the ladies swooned.
Then they introduced Stay, now this was funny because you know how they call out for the ladies at the beginning? And they say it was lukewarm? HA- There was NO accusing those screams of being lukewarm. I think he had to change the line, and I laughed. Everybody was ready for them. Soon as they started Stay the audience knew exactly what it was and joined in on the verses and chorus. GC went into his story about Treat, and they did Treat for us, I was so happy to see it was still there, and it has a different intro. Kind of a Michael Jackson "Billie Jean" type intro. I don't really know how to explain it more, so maybe those who are going to AC can help me out. LOL. Either way it was awesome and really "funky".
They did the intros and during the intros they dedicated a special part to Harry McGilberry their "Tempt brother" The audience went wild, you could feel the love for Harry in there. I felt tears come to my eyes. Then they brought a special guest onto the stage. Someone who came from Detroit, Michigan to see the show......LEVI STUBBS. They brought him out on stage and the guys were loving on him. Oh I can't tell you how proud I felt at THAT moment. I was so happy to just have laid eyes on this legend at least once in my lifetime. The audience was on their FEET by now. It was just a great place to be. The Stranahan is a HUGE theatre and the place was SOLD OUT!
The guys went on to do the "Ol Skool" part, and during "It's Growing" I decided to get a little closer. We walked up to the stage where Joe saw me RIGHT away and stopped singing to kiss me. It was a lot of fun. We went back to our seats after that, and watched the rest of the show. Terry was so wonderful during SILMB, and was just...breath-taking. EARTH-QUAKING. LOL! Okay, and when they picked him up after the "Whatchu gon do Terry?" part they nearly threw him off the stage, they picked him up with such force. (Yep, Ron remembered...lol) He did a great job on it, needless to say.
During My Girl the entire audience was on their feet. The show continued on, and sadly Losing You began. They did a great job and we enjoyed them very much. Towards the middle of the song we hustled to the front to shake their hands and they did the dance off thing, and came back on. Instead of shaking our hands however, they went back to their microphones, and O said something about Reflections, (I couldn't hear him for all the shouting) and they went into CAN I GET A WITNESS!! That was an extra special treat! Those dance moves....were on POINT, and my my my! That'sall I can say about that.
I know I had read told us about them using those tamborines (sp??) and I assumed maybe it was just something special, because I didn't notice them on the stools. THEY pulled those tamborines out and TOOK US TO CHURCH!!! I couldn't believe it! It was so hard to look at everything at once!
Otis came over to ME after the show (that felt good) and signed autographs and gave hugs and kisses and I-love-yous, and was just a great gentleman. I got to hug and kiss Joe, and he signed my Reflections! We saw GC, and talked to he and Ron for a while as well. It was just a great great time had by all. Didn't see my baby though... , but hey, next time....
